Announcing the next class for 2026!
(I have just finished relocating the studio, so stay tuned for more details on upcoming classes. But here's some info about the first class for 2026!)
If you struggle to find compositions you like when you are sketching and painting (particularly while travelling or working outside), you might want to consider registering for my Value Studies workshop -- the classes always fill fast!
What’s a value study? It’s a very quick, small sketch or painting in two or three colours (such as three shades of grey), mapping out the contrast, the dark and light patterns in the scene you’d like to draw or paint. I use value studies to clear away the clutter in the scene and focus on creating a balanced composition. A value study helps me look at a busy scene and begin to pull out the bits that interest me, or edit things that need to be removed or moved.
Value studies are another of my favorite art tools (like notan!) so if you’re interested in quickly improving your eye for composition and using value studies to help you do so quickly, this class is for you.

NOTAN BOOTCAMP
In this 2-hour LIVE online class, you will learn how to use notan, or 'dark light harmony', to select great compositions every time.
I’ll take you through six scenes and plenty of notan exercises to build your confidence and significantly improve your art.
