A drawing competition for artists living in the US
The Martha's Vineyard Drawing Prize is a competition established to encourage the pursuit of excellence in drawing.
The competition is sponsored by artist Elizabeth R. Whelan, a painter and printmaker living on the island of Martha's Vineyard. She believes that solid drawing skills are not only useful in creating artwork of all types, but can also be employed in the creation of beautiful drawings ranging from the immediate sketch to the fine classical rendering, from the contemporary abstract to the exploration of subject without the distraction of color.
Many artists who enjoy and excel at drawing find few outlets for their talents. The Martha's Vineyard Drawing Prize provides a means to bring attention to the beauty and accessibility of drawing in all its forms.
The Martha's Vineyard Drawing Prize is open to artists 18 years and older who reside in the US, and this year's theme is 'The Ties That Bind'.
Drawings may be created using graphite, charcoal, Conté, silverpoint, pen & ink, or other suitable drawing media, on paper or board. This is an online-only competition so there is no size restriction, and no need to frame and ship your work.
The deadline is Sunday, July 28, 2019. Prizes and awards will be announced Sunday, August 11, 2019.

E. R. Whelan returns to Craftworks Gallery in Oak Bluffs
I feel fortunate to have my work in two places on Martha's Vineyard this year -- at Night Heron Gallery in Vineyard Haven, and also returning for a second year to that lovely and eclectic Oak Bluffs gallery, Craftworks Gallery at 42 Circuit Avenue. It's impossible to go in there without finding some treasure, all made by American artists and craftspeople!
The work I am painting for them this year is quite peaceful in nature - lovely flowers in rustic arrangements, landscapes and agricultural scenes from around the Vineyard, and other summer memories.
I so enjoy working with gallery owners Paula Cantanese and Ron DiOrio and we all look forward to you visiting and seeing their amazing offerings!
Whelan's nautical paintings at Night Heron Gallery
I'm delighted to announce that I am showing (and selling!) my work at the Night Heron Gallery this year, 58 Main Street in Vineyard Haven, MA. The wonderful artists and artisans who make up the collective are an extremely talented group and I am fortunate to be showing with them!
My section of the gallery will be for displaying my oil paintings on nautical and marine themes -- boats, boat building, sailing, woodworking, boat builders, and the working waterfront of Martha's Vineyard.
And what is more, I will also be showing my block prints (both linocut and wood) that I make using a Conrad 24 etching press in my studio. The nautical and woodworking theme is the same although the art is different, and the prints are limited editions, both framed and unframed.
The gallery is open daily 10 am - 5 pm (in the summer until 6 pm). The artists themselves take shifts working in the gallery so you are always talking to an artist when you visit.
I look forward to seeing you there!
